If You’re Going to Eat a Chocolate Bar, Eat This One
the most blood sugar balanced chocolate bar I've ever found
I’m not a fan of sugar…at all. I have big dreams of sugar beets rotting in fields and unsweetened baked goods being sold in all my local coffee shops. (In my whisper voice: Don’t lose me here, I’ll later tell you I ate a marshmallow.) I’d prefer that none of us ate the stuff, ever. Including myself. Dr. Sinatra says that “Sugar is the Major Cause of Heart Disease“, and I believe that.
But sometimes when every single thing in your diet is unsweetened and sugar-free, you want a tiny little nibble of something sweet and chocolaty. Other times, it’s not a want but a need — you need a few bites of dark chocolate to keep you from eating a fancy cupcake at your best friend’s 30th birthday party. Wait…maybe you should eat the cupcake or everyone will give you the stink eye for pretending to be Miss-Goody-Two-Shoes-I-Don’t-Eat-Cupcakes-Because-I’m-Too-Cool-For-That.
If you’re going to bank a few organic sugar points, it won’t be a waste to use them up on this 85% pure dark chocolate bar by Sweetriot.
Here are 3 reasons why:
1. It’s blood sugar balanced like no other chocolate bar I’ve seen
The amount of protein in it equals the amount of sugar in it which equals the amount of fiber in it. This chocolate bar will not spike your blood sugar and will not give you an insulin rush, even though it has sugar in it.
1 serving = 4 grams of protein, 4 grams of sugar, 4 grams of fiber
2. It’s organic and fair trade
Tsh Oxenreider wrote an EXCELLENT article about the fair trade chocolate industry (which you should read immediately). Fair trade chocolate matters and it’s a big, big deal. Organic chocolate is not only healthier for you but also for the workers — they didn’t have to bathe in pesticide to harvest your chocolate. Organic food protects everyone’s brains.
3. Dark chocolate is an antioxidant powerhouse
The darker the chocolate, the more the antioxidants. I’m not worried about the 4 grams of sugar per serving when the chocolate bar is full of biochemistry that ushers health to my body and healing to my inflamed little stressed out arteries. The flavonoids found in cocoa can calm the inflammation found in the lining of your blood vessels, because surprise, you have inflammation! That inflammation in your arteries began the day you were born. Minimize it as best as you can, and you will increase your longevity (this includes looking young, if you’re going for that).
This is the only sugar containing food that I feel confident recommending to my patients. When I put patients on a strict insulin resistance diet that excludes all sugar and sweeteners, I tell them specifically, that if they are craving something sweet, to eat a few squares of Sweetriot’s 85% pure dark chocolate.
I stash this chocolate in my purse when I’m going to parties, just in case I’m tempted to eat some sugar loaded GF dessert. It helps deter me. I’ve also used this chocolate for yam s’mores (raw yam slice, dark chocolate, and a roasted marshmallow). Don’t hate me for eating a marshmallow.
If you talked to me in 2006, when I was super super strict with my diet and did not budge on a single buttered popcorn Jelly Belly bean, I would have said this chocolate bar was unhealthy only because it contained sugar. Nowadays, we’re trying not to be so OCD anymore. OCD can inflame your blood vessels more than 4 grams of sugar.
This blog post is not endorsed or paid. I found this chocolate on my own. I am so impressed with how good-for-you it is, and I want everyone to know about it. If you’re going to eat chocolate, this is the chocolate to eat.
I love how the company leaves little messages inside the wrapper, telling me I’m brilliant. Thanks, Sweetriot, you are too, for creating the most blood sugar balanced organic fair trade chocolate bar I’ve ever found.

It’s so hard to find good chocolate in Orlando. It was pretty much every where I went in Seattle. I’ll have to check Amazon for this one – thanks for the suggestion!
